![]() Understanding the Rainforest Mind: The Social-Emotional Needs of Gifted Children Children who are gifted can be misunderstood. It’s often assumed that because they are “so smart,” they don’t have special needs or they’ll be fine without guidance or academic accommodations. Their intense emotions, sensitivities, perfectionism, complex thinking capacity, and anxieties can be seen as ADHD, immaturity, arrogance or laziness. If parents and educators understand the traits and needs that often accompany giftedness, they will be better able to support these children. Paula Prober will explain these traits and needs. She will present strategies that are easy to implement and that work at home and at school and will suggest resources that are easily available. Paula Prober, M.S., M.Ed. is a licensed counselor and consultant in private practice in Eugene, Oregon. Over the 30+ years she has worked with the gifted, Prober has been a teacher, consultant, adjunct instructor with the University of Oregon and a guest presenter at Pacific University and Oregon State University. Her book titled Your Rainforest Mind: A Guide to the Well-Being of Gifted Adults and Youth was released in June 2016. She blogs about gifted adults and parenting gifted children at rainforestmind.com.
