​Keynote Speaker: Michael Clay Thompson

Keynote Topic (Tentative): "Literacy and the Gifted Child"

Michael Clay Thompson
The author of seventy books and more than 200 articles, Michael Clay Thompson spent thirty years as a classroom teacher, Coordinator of Gifted Education for McDowell County, NC; Dean of Academics for Coastal Academy in Myrtle Beach South Carolina; and Head of the Middle School at the Sycamore School for the Gifted in Indianapolis.  He was a teacher at The Cullowhee Experience, one of the nation’s oldest residential programs for gifted students and taught philosophy at the North Carolina Governor’s School. He contributed three chapters to Developing Verbal Talent, published by the Center for Gifted Education of William and Mary University, and served on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal for Secondary Gifted Education.  Mr. Thompson has also served as consultant to the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary and as consultant and Lead Scholar for the National Javits Project for Language Arts Research. In addition to service on the board of the North Carolina Association of Gifted and Talented, he is past President of the Indiana Association for the Gifted and served on the Board of Directors of the NAGC (National Association for Gifted Children).

His books and curriculum packages are treasured by both homeschoolers and classroom educators.  Spanning learning levels from elementary to secondary, they include The Music of the Hemispheres: Poetics for Young Children; The Word Within the Word; Grammar Island; Essay Voyage; Caesar’s English; Classics in the Classroom; Advanced Academic Writing; Free at Last: the Language of Dr. Martin Luther King; and Lincoln’s Ten Sentences: the Story of the Gettysburg Address.
