Science & Technology Competition

Who: Elementary grade students (4th, 5th or 6th grade level)
What: New Science & Technology Competition
When: During participating county fairs and at Oregon State Fair 8/22 - 9/1
Where: Various statewide county fairgrounds and at Oregon State Fairgrounds
Why: To foster Science & Technology education and innovation

Summary:
A new statewide Science and Technology competition will begin in 2008 with elementary school students. The competition will grow to include other academia levels and entrepreneurial endeavors in subsequent years. The elementary grade competition will be a derivative of the current competition guidelines developed by Intel Northwest Science Expo (NWSE). The guidelines set forth by Intel NWSE were selected due to the
familiarity and program awareness by the Oregon Science Teachers Association (OSTA). A few of the categories were removed from the Middle School Rule Booklet to accommodate a younger audience.

The Davidson Academy of Nevada

Application Deadline Extended to June 1, 2008

The application deadline for The Davidson Academy of Nevada’s 2008-2009 school year has been extended to June 1, 2008.

A free, public school for profoundly gifted pupils on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, The Davidson Academy of Nevada is seeking qualified students for the 2008-2009 school year. The mission of The Davidson Academy is to provide profoundly gifted young people an advanced educational opportunity matched to their abilities, strengths and interests. The Academy is a non-residential, full-time day school and many families have relocated to Reno in order for their student(s) to attend.

To be eligible to attend The Davidson Academy, students must be at the middle or high school level across all subject areas and score in the 99.9th percentile on IQ or college entrance tests, such as the SAT or ACT. The Academy is specifically designed to meet the needs of profoundly gifted middle and high school students, starting at the sixth grade level and beyond. Summer programs for TAG and High-Ability Students at Oregon State University

Oregon State University’s Precollege Programs for TAG and High-AbilityYouth offer a unique opportunity for academic enrichment and social interaction with peers of similar abilities. Participants choose from a wide selection of exciting, challenging, and stimulating courses not typically available in the usual school setting. Courses are designed to meet the special needs of enrolled learners and are taught by experts in their fields.
Qualified students are those who are identified as TAG or have a total battery test score at or above the 90th percentile.

U of O Summer Enrichment Program

The University of Oregon Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) offers stimulating academic experiences and exciting social activities designed for gifted and highly able middle and high school students. Bring your love of learning, your humor and your unique talents to a community where intelligence and creativity are valued and supported! Students must be in grades 6-10 during the 2007-08 school year or at an equivalent home school level to apply for SEP. Formal gifted identification or educator nomination is required for admittance.

Pursue existing interests and discover new ones in six courses that you will choose from a list of roughly thirty options! Academic classes are offered each weekday in science, mathematics, literature, writing, law, cultural studies, dance, theatre, media arts, and visual arts. Please visit our website for listings and descriptions of 2007 courses. 2008 courses will be posted online in late April as they become finalized.

As a part of SEP, get a taste of campus life at the University of Oregon. Live in residence halls, learn in university classrooms, and eat in on-campus dining halls! Living groups are divided by age and gender, with two students sharing each room. Each day balances structure with student choice. Spend your time after classes relaxing with friends, shopping in local campus stores, or participating in a variety of outdoor activities, and choose among a different set of events options every evening!

The ACADEMY program has long been recognized as an outstanding educational opportunity for students in thePacific Northwest. Students selected for each residential session held on the Southern Oregon University campus inAshlandinteract with peers of similar abilities while being challenged by creative, imaginative instructors and activities. Students also attend a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We would love to have your students attend!
