The National Association for Gifted Children is pleased to announce the NAGC-Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Program.  A $500 U.S. Savings Bond, funded by the Nicholas Green Foundation and NAGC, is awarded to one student from each state, along with an NAGC Certificate of Excellence.  Students selected for the award are between grades 3 and 6 and have distinguished themselves in either academic achievement, leadership, or the visual or performing arts. The award program was established through funds provided by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while vacationing in Italy in 1994. The Greens felt it was important to recognize the gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died. NAGC is honored to be part of the Greens' generous spirit. That the award exists is a tribute to the determination of the Greens to take a terrible tragedy and turn it into a positive force of recognition. NICHOLAS GREEN DISTINGUISHED STUDENT AWARD
2006-2007 School Year

The National Association for Gifted Children is continuing the NAGC - Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Awards program for the 2006 to 2007 school year. The awards, funded by the Nicholas Green Foundation, and the Nicholas Green Scholarship Fund are designed to recognize excellence in young children. The Awards, which include a U.S. Savings Bond, will be made in every state to a student who is between grades 3 and 6 who has distinguished him- or herself in academics, leadership, or the arts.

The Nicholas Green Foundation was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old son Nicholas who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994. The Foundation has already awarded scholarships to high-ability high school and college students to enable them to advance their education. The Greens started the Distinguished Student Awards because they felt it was important to recognize gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died. The Green Foundation began funding the awards in the 1998-99 school year.

NAGC works with one state affiliate in each state to select students for this honor. Students may be selected at any time during the school year, and it is suggested that the awards be presented at each state affiliate’s annual meeting. At the end of each school year NAGC will publish the names of all Distinguished Students in the Association newsletter and will issue a press release to the general media.

NAGC is honored to be part of the Greens’ generous spirit. We look forward to seeing that Nicholas’ legacy benefits young children who demonstrate excellence in all areas of endeavor – from fine and performing arts to leadership positions to academic achievement. We believe that this award program will not only stimulate children to achieve to their fullest potential, but that it will highlight high-ability students and draw attention to the educational needs of our nation’s gifted and talented students.

The Award

Awards will be made in each state to one student each school year to recognize students. Recipients must be between grades 3 and 6, and can have achieved excellence in any area of endeavor – visual or performing arts, academic achievement, or leadership. As an affiliate of NAGC, we at OATAG are pleased to continue our participation in the selection of an NAGC Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award recipient from the state of Oregon.
