Legislative Update - Senate Bill 312
Jan 03 2007 Filed in: Legislative
Progress a summary of bills related to gifted
education.
This is to inform you that Sen. Kate Brown's office
has let me know that they filed a pre-session bill
for us and it has been drafted. It is LC 2059 and
will be Senate Bill 312.
This bill will require school districts to provide copies of their written plans of instruction for talented and gifted students (which every district is already required to have) to the Superintendent of Public Instruction for approval.
In effect the bill changes the "may" in an earlier law to a "shall" in the current law.
The bill would go into effect July 1, 2007 and apply to next school year.
As soon as an electronic version is available on the web, I will send a copy out.
This is a very good time to contact your legislators and ask them to support TAG students. In particular, if your legislator is on one of the education committees, it is very important to contact him or her with your comments.
If you are not sure who your legislators are or how to contact them, go to the legislative website at http://www.leg.state.or.us/
However, if your senator or representative is new this session, you will have to wait: the updated information hasn't yet been added to the website.
